GRADE 2

Level 2 Open Night

The Grade 2’s had a fantastic and extremely successful Open Night and parents loved moving around the various work stations set up in the room. The night gave students the opportunity to teach their parents some of the things they have been learning throughout the year. The work stations included a spelling journal activity, a reading corner where parents were asked questions using the thinking hats, a writer’s corner, a maths activity to determine how much your name is worth and the mini laptops to show off our fantastic ICT skills and digital portfolios. To top it off, parents were able to watch a slide show showing the story of Grade 2 so far. It was an extremely enjoyable night for all!

Garden Awards

We hosted the Garden Awards judge to showcase our gardens. Thanks to Ms Casonato and students who impressed the judge with their presentation and tour of our school as well as enjoying muffins made with our own produce - eggs and silver-beet. We sometimes don’t realise what a great environment we have here at Sandy East with the wonderful garden developments. Our next venture is in the front garden where we will develop a learning environment for our Developmental and Inquiry Curriculum to be used by all students.

Japanese News

Grade 1 and 2 students have been using mini whiteboards to practice writing their hiragana characters. Now the students know at least 20 hiragana, they are starting to write some useful words. They learnt classroom objects in Japanese. Keane Sensei

Grade 1/2 Woodwork Incursion

The grade 1s and 2s had a woodwork incursion. We made a windmill, it was hard but fun. We had to listen carefully first when we got a piece of wood and we traced it on another piece of wood. We cut it with a saw then stuck it on a block. We put a nail in the block then got a stick and put it on some wood. Mine couldn’t spin around so I needed hot glue. We used a hammer and a saw. We also had to use some nails and glue. It was fun putting the nails in the wood. We needed an elastic band for spinning it around too. By Georgie

Prep - Grade 2 Swimming

We saw the end of the Prep-Grade 2 Intensive Swimming program. The program was a great success and was enjoyed by all participants. The last day was especially exciting as the children enjoyed games and relays to practice their skills. Well done to a brave Mrs. Casonato-Pal and Mrs. Castrillon who shook aside fear and cold and joined the children in the water - to much enjoyment and laughter!

Swimming

The Prep, Grade 1 and Grade 2 children have been swimming at Mentone Grammar Pool. We have all been having a wonderful time learning about different water safety skills and perfecting our swimming strokes. We would like to say a big thank you to all the parents who have come to help and support us over the week. Your time and dedication are greatly appreciated.

When we arrive at the pool we get into our groups and we sit on the edge of the pool waiting for our swimming teachers. Will the water be warm or cold today we wonder? Some of us are given kick boards and we are swimming down the pool. It is fun to dive down to get the brick from the bottom of the pool. We all like doing dives at the end of our lesson. Our swimming teachers are really nice to us. It is time to get out of the pool, dressed and on the bus for our journey back to school. I like our swimming lessons - they are awesome! From Maddy and Aren

African Drumming

A typical chilly May morning was transformed into a hot, tropical West African Drum and Dance Fiesta! The students had fun learning about African culture and did themselves proud with amazing drum rhythms and dance moves.  By Geoff R.

Education Week

To celebrate Education Week, we enjoyed fun Literacy and Numeracy activities across the school. Students were broken up in multi-age groupings P - 2 and 3 - 6 so they could help and learn from each other. Students were involved in activities such as Nin Nin or Math millionaire and literacy games such „What am I?” or Cracking Codes. Not only did the children have fun but they got to know others within the school better.

A great day was had by all!

What a big change we have seen!

We sadly had to say goodbye to our chickens, but we would like to tell you all about what happened while they were here! It all began on Monday 2 weeks ago. We were doing our maths when there was a knock at the door. Our 10 eggs had arrived. We were told that the chicks were due to hatch on Wednesday but if we were really quiet we might be able to hear them making "cheep, cheep" sounds inside their eggs! The eggs had to stay in the incubator where it was 38 degrees, because this makes the shells soft and much easier for the little chicks to hatch out of. Wednesday was such an exciting day at SEPS! Chicks hatched in all of the Grade 1 and 2 class-rooms. That morning we came in and saw the big crack in the egg, we watched very patiently and finally a leg popped out followed by an exhausted little chick! All of the others followed quickly. Unfortunately some of our chicks didn't make it. It was sad, but we were feeling very lucky to have 7 healthy, strong, fluffy chicks to look after. We have been amazed at just how much they have changed every single day. They eat so much and are starting to get proper feathers now. They eat and drink all day! We have taken lots of photos and videos and they have been a fantastic learning tool for our topic of "lifecycles". They are much bigger and their soft, fluffy down is starting to turn into feathers. We really enjoyed looking after the chicks especially when we got to hold them and give them fresh food and water every day. The teachers all thought that we did a fantastic job. We were sad to say goodbye, but happy that some of our school families have adopted the chicks so we will still get to hear all about their adventures!  By Grade 2W

Dinosaur Diggers

Grades 1s and 2s had a wonderful experience when "Dinosaur Diggers" came to SEPS. The visiting presenters taught the children lots about dinosaurs. They even had a chance to dig for fossils!

Junior School Expo Sports

The Prep, Grade 1 and Grade 2 students enjoyed a fantastic morning when they took part in the Expo Sports carnival with children from Black Rock Primary. The children learnt new skills and consolidated ones they already have in a fun program, using some fabulous state of the art equipment. The SEPS teachers were very proud of the way our students had a go at everything, helped each other and behaved themselves.

A HUGE thank you to all of the wonderful parents who gave up their time to assist with the running of activities, the cooking of our yummy barbecue lunch and supporting the teachers to ensure the day ran so smoothly. Also thank you to Brumby’s Sandringham and Coles Sandringham for their generosity on the day.

Grade 1& 2 Excursion to Science Works

Grade 1 and 2 travelled over the Westgate Bridge to Science Works. We have been learning about our place in space this term, so it was a great opportunity to learn more about this topic with a trip to the Planetarium at Science Works. We all really enjoyed the day and we got to have a play in the general viewing area, sports works, Nitty Gritty Super City, the House of Secrets and of course the Planetarium. It was a great day and all of the students were extremely well behaved and represented our school with pride. Here is what some of the students said about the excursion:

“I like the planetarium because I learnt where Jupiter is in the sky” Thea B.

“I got to race against Cathy Freeman in sports works and I beat her. It was awesome!” Jack B.
“When you rode a bike a skeleton showed you how your bones work. It was a bit scary” Jenny K.
Well done to all the students who attended, we all had a great time! Mr Casey.

The Veggies are for Us - Thanks to the Scarecrows!

There is a new addition to the veggie patch this week with Grade 2 students finishing their scarecrows in Art class. Students went outside to stuff scarecrow body parts with hay. Boots and a straw hat were just the perfect finishing touch! What do you think?

Scarecrows for the Veggie Patch

In Art class, Grade 2 students have started to make Scarecrows for the veggie garden! This week, students sewed hands, eyes, a mouth and a head. Helpers were really impressed with the sewing skills!

Chook Art

The chook shed has continued to be a point of daily interest to our SEPS students. The chooks are laying lots of eggs and exhibiting personalities all of their own. This week the chooks featured as a not so still life sketching activity for Grade 1 and 2 students. First the children went on a journey to the chook shed. Their task to follow was to sketch a chicken, focusing on the small details such as feathers, eyes and feet.

Grade 1 & 2 Rippon Lea Excursion

Grade 1C and 1P went to Ripponlea. Our hosts for the day were Martin and Lindy who showed us around. We went on a guided tour of the inside of the house and we saw where the servants work and what their chores were. Lindy, who dressed in period costume to represent a working servant, showed us many things that were used 100 years ago.

Martin took us in his time machine back to the year 1887 when the Sargood Family lived at Ripponlea. The family consisted of 12 children and we saw their playthings including dolls and lead toy soldiers. We played old fashioned games on the Ripponlea lawn such as skittles, hula hoops, iron hoops and croquet. We had a lot of fun running on the lawn. After lunch we went on a nature hunt called - creature catcher. This involved children heading off in different directions looking for markings on posts. We had to find twelve animals. A fun day was had by all. (By Grade 1C)

Grade 2 Olympic Presentations

We have all been glued to our TV’s in our spare time to catch a glimpse of the Olympics, especially all of the Grade 2 students. Our project for the Olympics was to pick an Aussie athlete out of a hat. From there, during the two weeks we had to research all about our athlete. We had to find out what sport they played, when their events were in the Olympics, what place they came in their event, any previous Olympic glory and some quirky things as well.

Since the Olympics have finished, we have been using this week in Grade two to present all of our information and findings to the rest of the year level. Mr. Casey and Ms Gau let us choose how we wanted to present it. We had a choice of a poster, in our homework books or using the electronic whiteboard with a word document or PowerPoint presentation. Our presentations have been fabulous and we can all see the amounts of work and effort that have been put into the presentations and homework projects overall.

Olden Day Style

Grade 1 & 2 students have been learning about “Now and Then” and were fascinated when Merv, one of our community reading volunteers, brought along his 1928 Austin Morris 7 for them to look at. Merv has owned the car since he was 17 and told the children he looks after it like it is a child! The children were able to see how cars have changed over time and were amazed at the differences to the cars their parents drive today. Mrs Casonato-Pal was allowed to sit in the drivers seat - but wasn’t allowed to take it for a spin!

MCG Excursion - Grade 1 & 2

All of the grade 1s and 2s studied the Olympic Games and integrated this with our topic for the term – A Journey Through Time. To celebrate these two topics, on Monday 28th July we all went to the MCG to learn about our sporting past and present, with an emphasis on the Olympic games.
During the day we were lucky enough to view the new National Sports Museum, have a play in the interactive games section, listen to Larry Sengstock (The 1984 Australian Basketball captain) talk to us about competing in the games, and finally tour the MCG, getting into the changing rooms and walking out onto the sacred turf of the ground.
The day was a great success and very beneficial to all that attended. Well done and thank you to all of the teachers and parents who helped out and to all of the children who were fantastic and well behaved. " Sam Casey

Grade 1 and 2 Open Night

A very successful night was held for our Grade 1s and 2s. The evening started with the children entertaining their families and friends with a variety of songs and reports around the topic of “Our Beautiful World”. Grade 1s delighted everyone with their frog masks, reminding us how fragile our environment is. Grade 2s used their “Thinking Hats” to tackle environmental issues. Visitors then enjoyed time to look in their children's classrooms where the children showcased their work and all the wonderful things happening in the classroom.

Thank you to those who braved the cold to support this event.

School Tree Day

As part of the Schools Tree Day, students in grades 1, 2 and 3 were part of a special tree planting activity. Magnolia trees were planted in the sanctuary part of our school garden as a memorial to two of our parents, Mr Phillip Bracchi and Mr Adam Beck, who tragically passed away, in separate incidents, earlier this year. This week also saw the next phase of our veggie patch project - planting of seedlings. Andrew Newton assisted grades with planting their veggie boxes on Monday and Tuesday.

Level 2 Ceres Excursion

On Thursday the Grade 1 & 2s went to Ceres Community Environment Park for an excursion. The children have been learning about “Our Beautiful World” and Ceres affirmed the many ideas about the environment. The children were involved in activities where they learnt about Rubbish & Recycling, Modern Houses, Bees and Pond Life & Fishing. It was fantastic to see all the grade 1 & 2s mixed together to share and enjoy this special day.

Active After Schools Communities - Circus Skills

Some of our students from Prep to Grade 2 have been participating in the Active After School Circus Program. Every Monday after school these students enjoy a healthy snack, then learn and develop their Circus Skills.

They have been practicing their juggling, balancing and coordination. They also use devil sticks, hoola hoops, diablos and lots of other fun circus equipment.

Thank you to all the teachers who have given up their time to supervise these up and coming clowns.

Grade 2s “Our Community” Topic

The grade 2’s have celebrated the end of their integrated topic “Our Community”. As part of a homework project each child constructed a shop they would like to see in an “Ideal Community”. To get a true feel of what our community would feel like, the grade 2’s designed and built Kidztown, which was then put on display for their parents to come along and view last Wednesday.
All of the children were extremely proud of their work throughout the topic and being able to showcase their final product to their families and friends was a big buzz.
The teachers would like to thank all of the Grade 2 children for all of their hard work and persistence throughout the topic and also thank all of the parents who presented talks in the classroom, those who helped out and on excursions, and the parents who came and viewed Kidztown last Wednesday.

Grade 2’s visit to Sandringham.

Grade 2, along with the teachers and some parents, went for a long walk to Sandringham because we are learning about our community. We left the school, crossed the road at the old fire station and walked along Bluff Rd until we got to Bay Rd. We stopped at different places in our community as we walked. Some of these places were doctors’ surgeries, an aged care facility, dentists, a plant nursery, John Batman Gardens and a child care centre. Once we reached Sandringham town centre we saw lots of shops. There were restaurants, cafes, fish and chip shops, milkbars, supermarkets, bakeries and a health food shop. We also saw hairdressers, a pet store, the Post Office, banks, clothes shops, butchers, a video shop, drycleaners, a chemist, a newsagency and a hardware store. Then we walked past the Library and Coles. After that we went to the Rotunda at Sandringham Beach where we all ate our snack. We then had a play on the play equipment
at the park. Finally we all had a long and tiring walk back to school.
Grade 2 had an interesting and enjoyable visit to Sandringham.

GRADE 1-2 OPEN NIGHT

We had an open night where parents were invited to watch the students  and then visit the classrooms to look at the students work.

"Our class did a performance. We did a dance, our poem and our folk dance. I was really nervous and I kept smiling and I giggled a bit too. I thought I did pretty well. It was a good feeling. I got used to it after a few minutes. I had so much fun. When I got into the classroom I tried to make the most interesting picture. I did that with Shannae. When I got home I was so, so tired." Portia

"Grade One and Two did a performance. We all did a poem. Our poem was called Lions and Tigers. I was nervous but excited too. I think every body had a good time."

"I had a good time. I like dancing and everything else but most of all I enjoyed it. I hope my mum and dad liked it. Also, I hope all of the parents liked it." Edi

"I enjoyed learning the folk dance because it was fun. I liked doing the dance and the poem. I liked watching the other grades. It was fun because we got to work with other people in time with the music. I liked the poem. It was called Lions and Tigers."

"I like the folk dance called La Vinca. I liked La Vinca the best and I liked saying "Lions and Tigers". It was fun." Alex

GRADE 1-2 Arts Centre Excursion

"We saw lots of plays. My favourite was Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves. There were other plays like The Fishermen and the Demon. We saw other schools too. When we were going back to school Edi and I talked about the play." Jack

"We went to the Fairfax Theatre in the Arts Centre. We watched different stories. It was fun to see it live. It was funny to see the two brothers acting out to be dogs because they came around squirting water from pistols. It was fun and I recommend it for other people. I am sure that others would like to see it." Loren

"We went to see a show about The Arabian Nights. Before the show started on the stage there were blue lights. My favourite story was The Fisherman and the Demon. My favourite part in the fisherman was when he was going to throw the bottle but the Demon keeps on talking to him. I also liked the bit when the girl starts to dance.
I recommend it for other people to watch. It was one of my favourite shows I’ve ever seen. My other favourite part is when they chop her head off then she starts to sing a song. The bit when the boy says “Open Sesame”, then the door made out of rock opened magically then he steals some gold." Gabby

"Went to see The Arabian Nights in a bus. I think they did seven plays. I liked all of it but my favorite play was Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves."

"The grades ones and twos went to the Melbourne Arts Centre to see some of the Arabian Nights stories. It was very good and very funny too. My favorite character was the king and he was very mean and greedy. The most favorite part for me was very funny. It was when these boys were pretending to be dogs and used water pistols to pretend to wee. The show was very good and I enjoyed it." Thomas

"Grades one and two went to the Melbourne Arts Centre. We saw Tales From The Arabian Nights. My favorite character was Shaharazad.
Shaharazad told strange and amazing stories to impress the king so he would be a good man. There were a few different stories like : Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, The Fisherman and the Demon and other stories. I really enjoyed it." Julia
