Life Ed Van
The Grade 1 visited the Life Ed Van. We learnt
about how to keep ourselves safe and healthy. The children were able
to practise calling an ambulance in an emergency situation. We have
learnt that it is very important to call 000 and not the other
numbers we hear on TV and to know our address and phone number so
the emergency service knows where to go. |

Level 2 Open Night
The Grade 1 children were very excited to share their
Investigations with their parents and family. Family members were
totally surprised at what the children are able to accomplish during
this time. The children also felt proud to report on their progress
and encouraged their parents to help them investigate further during
the night. As the Grade 1s are embarking on a new spelling program
it was great to hear about THRASS from Ms Pfeffer.
Thank you to everyone who came and made it an enjoyable evening.

Garden Awards
We hosted the Garden Awards judge to showcase our gardens.
Thanks to Ms Casonato and students who impressed the judge with
their presentation and tour of our school as well as enjoying
muffins made with our own produce - eggs and silver-beet. We
sometimes don’t realise what a great environment we have here at
Sandy East with the wonderful garden developments. Our next
venture is in the front garden where we will develop a learning
environment for our Developmental and Inquiry Curriculum to be
used by all students. |

Grade 1/2 Woodwork Incursion
The grade 1s and 2s had a woodwork incursion. We made a
windmill, it was hard but fun. We had to listen carefully first
when we got a piece of wood and we traced it on another piece of
wood. We cut it with a saw then stuck it on a block. We put a
nail in the block then got a stick and put it on some wood. Mine
couldn’t spin around so I needed hot glue. We used a hammer and
a saw. We also had to use some nails and glue. It was fun
putting the nails in the wood. We needed an elastic band for
spinning it around too. By Georgie |

Prep - Grade 2 Swimming
Last Friday saw the end of the Prep-Grade 2 Intensive Swimming
program. The program was a great success and was enjoyed by all
participants. The last day was especially exciting as the children
enjoyed games and relays to practice their skills. Well done to a
brave Mrs. Casonato-Pal and Mrs. Castrillon who shook aside fear and
cold and joined the children in the water - to much enjoyment and
laughter! |

Swimming
The Prep, Grade 1 and Grade 2 children have been
swimming at Mentone Grammar Pool. We have all been having a
wonderful time learning about different water safety skills and
perfecting our swimming strokes. We would like to say a big thank
you to all the parents who have come to help and support us over the
week. Your time and dedication are greatly appreciated.
When we arrive at the pool we get into our groups and we sit on
the edge of the pool waiting for our swimming teachers. Will the
water be warm or cold today we wonder? Some of us are given kick
boards and we are swimming down the pool. It is fun to dive down to
get the brick from the bottom of the pool. We all like doing dives
at the end of our lesson. Our swimming teachers are really nice to
us. It is time to get out of the pool, dressed and on the bus for
our journey back to school. I like our swimming lessons - they are
awesome! From Maddy and Aren

Discovery Learning in Grade 1
Students from 1P used colored material to help
them act out the life cycle of a butterfly in Discovery Time. They
pretended to be caterpillars and then wrapped themselves in the
material to form a cocoon. When they came out of the cocoon they
used the material for the wings of the butterfly. Students narrated
their play and performed it to the three Grade 1 classes.

Education Week
To celebrate Education Week, we enjoyed fun Literacy and
Numeracy activities across the school. Students were broken up in
multi-age groupings P - 2 and 3 - 6 so they could help and learn
from each other. Students were involved in activities such as Nin
Nin or Math millionaire and literacy games such „What am I?” or
Cracking Codes. Not only did the children have fun but they got to
know others within the school better.
A great day was had by all!

What a big change we have seen!
We sadly had to say goodbye to our chickens, but we
would like to tell you all about what happened while they were
here! It all began on Monday 2 weeks ago. We were doing our
maths when there was a knock at the door. Our 10 eggs had
arrived. We were told that the chicks were due to hatch on
Wednesday but if we were really quiet we might be able to hear
them making "cheep, cheep" sounds inside their eggs! The eggs
had to stay in the incubator where it was 38 degrees, because
this makes the shells soft and much easier for the little chicks
to hatch out of. Wednesday was such an exciting day at SEPS!
Chicks hatched in all of the Grade 1 and 2 class-rooms. That
morning we came in and saw the big crack in the egg, we watched
very patiently and finally a leg popped out followed by an
exhausted little chick! All of the others followed quickly.
Unfortunately some of our chicks didn't make it. It was sad, but
we were feeling very lucky to have 7 healthy, strong, fluffy
chicks to look after. We have been amazed at just how much they
have changed every single day. They eat so much and are starting
to get proper feathers now. They eat and drink all day! We have
taken lots of photos and videos and they have been a fantastic
learning tool for our topic of "lifecycles". They are much
bigger and their soft, fluffy down is starting to turn into
feathers. We really enjoyed looking after the chicks especially
when we got to hold them and give them fresh food and water
every day. The teachers all thought that we did a fantastic job.
We were sad to say goodbye, but happy that some of our school
families have adopted the chicks so we will still get to hear
all about their adventures! By Grade 2W |

RACV Incursion
Preps and Grade 1s were excited when they marched into the
Performing Arts room for a session on passenger and road safety. The children participated in a range of activities,
reinforcing the importance of safety when in a car and walking down
the street. It was particularly exciting for the children when they
played the role of Mum and Dad, driving a car with their very well
behaved children in the back! The Preps and Grade 1s ended the
session with a "round of applause" thanking Maree, the RACV lady.

Dinosaur Dioramas
This week the Grade 1 students have been giving
presentations about their Dinosaur Dioramas. We discussed
what we should do when giving a talk. Miss Parsons and Miss Jacobs
demonstrated "good and not so good" speeches and then we made a list
of good tips for giving a talk. The students came up with a
presentation format and they type of information that should be
included in their talk. The students have been practicing at home
and have been confidently presenting their talks this week to the
grade. We are very proud of the effort the children have put into
this project and we thank the parents for their support.

Oriental Environment
Have you seen the beautiful garden development
in the area behind the Grade 1 classrooms?
Over the holidays an amazing transformation has
occurred. The area is now a tranquil feature garden with an oriental
theme. The design includes meandering, stone-paved pathways, feature
rocks and pebbles, fish ponds, an arched bridge, bamboo feature
walls and more!
A huge thank you to two of our SEPS parents,
Andrew Newton and Russell Bennett for their hours of hard work,
skill and dedication in bringing this formally uninspiring patch in
our yard alive! |

Junior School Expo Sports
The Prep, Grade 1 and Grade 2 students enjoyed a
fantastic morning when they took part in the Expo Sports
carnival with children from Black Rock Primary. The children
learnt new skills and consolidated ones they already have in a
fun program, using some fabulous state of the art equipment. The
SEPS teachers were very proud of the way our students had a go
at everything, helped each other and behaved themselves.
A HUGE thank you to all of the wonderful parents who gave up
their time to assist with the running of activities, the cooking
of our yummy barbecue lunch and supporting the teachers to
ensure the day ran so smoothly. Also thank you to Brumby’s
Sandringham and Coles Sandringham for their generosity on the
day. Jessica Wadley (Expo-Sports co-ordinator) |

Grade 1& 2 Excursion to Science Works
Grade 1 and 2 travelled over the Westgate Bridge to
Science Works. We have been learning about our place in space, so it was a great opportunity to learn more about this topic
with a trip to the Planetarium at Science Works. We all really
enjoyed the day and we got to have a play in the general viewing
area, sports works, Nitty Gritty Super City, the House of Secrets
and of course the Planetarium. It was a great day and all of the
students were extremely well behaved and represented our school with
pride. Here is what some of the students said about the excursion:
“I like the planetarium because I learnt where Jupiter is in the
sky” Thea B.
“I got to race against Cathy Freeman in sports works and I beat
her. It was awesome!” Jack B.
“When you rode a bike a skeleton showed you how your bones work. It
was a bit scary” Jenny K.
Well done to all the students who attended, we all had a great time!

Grade 1C gets Mail !
Grade 1 C recently adopted Cora Pal (Ms C‘s
Mother in Law) as their pen pal. Each of our 26 students sent Cora a
letter asking questions about her life, particularly in the olden
days. The letters were beautifully written and illustrated. Much to
their excitement, this week the students each received a reply. They
read their letters with great interest and shared them with other
students. Some of the students reading their letters are in the
photograph below.
Many thanks Cora, for going to all that effort! |

Chook Art
The chook shed has continued to be a point of
daily interest to our SEPS students. The chooks are laying lots of
eggs and exhibiting personalities all of their own. The
chooks featured as a not so still life sketching activity for Grade
1 and 2 students. First the children went on a journey to the chook
shed. Their task to follow was to sketch a chicken, focusing on the
small details such as feathers, eyes and feet. |

Schools’ Garden Awards – Victoria
We are very proud of the wonderful developments in our school
grounds this year including the veggie garden, the new trees planted
in the Sanctuary area, the chicken coop, the new water tanks, the
front garden beds and more! With so many exciting things to “show
off” in our grounds, it was decided to put Sandy East forward for
the School’s Garden Awards for 2008. On Thursday 11th September the
judges visited our school and were taken on a guided tour of our
grounds. The grade 1 children popped out of their classroom to tell
our judges all about the chooks. They explained what is involved in
caring for them and how they are now laying lots of eggs.
Congratulation to our students for hosting our judges so
confidently and for being excellent ambassadors for our school.
Thank you also to Andrew Newton for his continued work with the
garden projects and for being available for the judges visit.

Grade 1 & 2 Rippon Lea Excursion
Grade 1C and 1P went to Ripponlea. Our hosts for
the day were Martin and Lindy who showed us around. We went on a
guided tour of the inside of the house and we saw where the servants
work and what their chores were. Lindy, who dressed in period
costume to represent a working servant, showed us many things that
were used 100 years ago.
Martin took us in his time machine back to the year 1887 when the
Sargood Family lived at Ripponlea. The family consisted of 12
children and we saw their playthings including dolls and lead toy
soldiers. We played old fashioned games on the Ripponlea lawn such
as skittles, hula hoops, iron hoops and croquet. We had a lot of fun
running on the lawn. After lunch we went on a nature hunt called -
creature catcher. This involved children heading off in different
directions looking for markings on posts. We had to find twelve
animals. A fun day was had by all. (By Grade 1C)

Olden Day Style
Grade 1 & 2 students have been learning about “Now and Then” and
were fascinated when Merv, one of our community reading volunteers,
brought along his 1928 Austin Morris 7 for them to look at. Merv has
owned the car since he was 17 and told the children he looks after
it like it is a child! The children were able to see how cars have
changed over time and were amazed at the differences to the cars
their parents drive today. Mrs Casonato-Pal was allowed to sit in
the drivers seat - but wasn’t allowed to take it for a spin!

MCG Excursion - Grade 1 & 2
All of the grade 1s and 2s studied the Olympic
Games and integrated this with our topic for
the term – A Journey Through Time. To celebrate these two topics, we all went to the MCG to learn about our sporting
past and present, with an emphasis on the Olympic games.
During the day we were lucky enough to view the new National Sports
Museum, have a play in the interactive games section, listen to
Larry Sengstock (The 1984 Australian Basketball captain) talk to us
about competing in the games, and finally tour the MCG, getting into
the changing rooms and walking out onto the sacred turf of the
ground.
The day was a great success and very beneficial to all that
attended. Well done and thank you to all of the teachers and parents
who helped out and to all of the children who were fantastic and
well behaved. Sam Casey |

PMP - Prep & Grade 1
Judie Bullus & Peter Coles came to SEPS to talk to Prep and Grade
1 parents about the importance of the Perceptual Motor Program.
Judie and Peter are both former teachers who have developed a unique
Australian program called “Smart Start with PMP”. These sequential
activities aim to develop a child’s perceptions and understandings
of themselves and the world around them through movement. Parent
helpers are required to run this program successfully. See your

Cora Pal.
Cora Pal, visiting author, freelance journalist
and retired university lecturer talked to Grade 1 B & C. Cora read
the students a Welsh folk story, “The Lady in the Lake” and answered
questions from children about her life in Wales. The children then
wrote their own imagined ending for the story, each speculating on
the lives of the Lady and her Lover. Cora expects to visit us next
year and give us some tips on creative writing. |

Footy Fever Day.
For assembly Anthony Stevens came
to our school and he told us how many years of footy he has played.
He has played for fifteen years. He told us about footy. I had a
footy lunch. Cameron
"Today it is Football Day. Anthony Stevens came to our school. The
Kangaroos went to the front of the assembly. I go for St Kilda. I
know the song and this is how it goes. "Oh when the Saints go
marching in, oh when the Saints go marching in, Oh how I want to be
in that number. Oh how the St Kilda Saints go marching in. Oh when
the saints go marching in, oh how I want to be in that number when
the saints go marching in."
